Here's a list of organisations and helplines you can turn to for more support.

Te Rau Ora has launched Huarahi Ora, the national bereavement triage and coordination service, established to support individuals and whānau following a suspected suicide. With care, compassion, and coordinated guidance, Huarahi Ora helps navigate the early stages of grief and loss. To get in touch, call 0800 437 009. 

Aoake te Rā is a free service that offers between six and eight counselling sessions for people affected by suicide loss. 

The Mental Health Foundation provides free information and advice to help people support themselves and each other after a suicide death

Other agencies or groups to contact may include: 

  • local family and community support agencies 
  • churches or faith groups 
  • marae 
  • cultural centres 
  • community centres or community workers 
  • a counsellor, school guidance counsellor or counselling agency 
  • social workers 
  • your doctor, community health centre or primary health organisation 
  • a community mental health or hauora Māori mental health team.

Workplace support programmes may be available in your workplace. Ask your employer. 

Budgeting services can help you budget and manage your money. Ask your local Citizens Advice Bureau for a contractor, or visit the Sorted website.

  • Youthline – call 0800 376 633, text 234 or email talk@youthline.co.nz  
  • Healthline – call 0800 611 116 for advice from trained registered nurses 
  • Depression Helpline – call 0800 111 757 to talk to a trained counsellor about how you are feeling  
  • Samaritans – call 0800 726 666 for confidential support if you’re lonely or in emotional distress 
  • Asian Family Services – call 0800 862 342 for free and confidential service available in 10 languages 
  • Vaka Tautua – call 0800 652 535 if you need someone to talk to. Available in Samoan, Tongan, Cook Islands Māori and English
